Dog owners, who recognize the early signs and symptoms of illness or pain in their dogs, will not only relieve their loved ones suffering but may also be able to save themselves an expensive trip to the veterinarian. Temperature, Respiratory Rate and Heart Rate

A newborn puppy will have a temperature of 94-97 F. which will eventually reach the normal adult body temperature of 101.5 F. at the age of 4 weeks old. Take care when trying to take your dog or puppies temperature as the thermometer can easily be broken off in the canines rectum. Also any form of excitement can cause the temperature to rise by 2-3 when the dog is actually in normal health. An adult dog will have a respiratory rate of 15-20 breaths per minute (depending on such variables as size and weight) and a heart rate of 80-120 beats per minute. You can feel for your dogs heartbeat by placing your hand on his/her lower ribcage just behind the elbow. Dont be alarmed if the heartbeat seems irregular compared to a humans heartbeat, it is irregular in many dogs. Have your vet check it out and get used to how it feels when it is normal.

Behavior Changes

Any behavior changes that are not associated with a change in the household atmosphere, such as jealousy over a new pet or child may be an indication of an illness. Signs of behavioral changes may be:

Depression

Anxiety

Fatigue

Sleepiness

Trembling

Falling/Stumbling

If your dog shows any of these signs, he/she needs to be kept under close watch for a few hours, or even a few days, until positive signs develop or he/she has returned to normal. Do not try to exercise the dog or put him/her in any situation that may cause stress. Most veterinarians will want for you to keep track of when the symptoms first appeared, whether they are getting better or worse, and also whether the symptoms are intermittent, continuous, or increasing in frequency.

Pain

Dogs that are in pain will likely indicate that they are suffering by giving you clues as to where the area of discomfort is. For instance, a dog that has abdominal pain will continually glance toward their belly, bite or lick the area, and will not want to leave his/her bed. The dog may stand hunched over, or take the prayer position which is when a dog gets down on its forelegs with the hind legs still standing, because of the pain in her abdomen area.

Dogs can not tell you that they are hurting or cry real tears but a dog may vocalize their pain in a different way. A dog that is hurt suddenly (such as being stepped on) will cry out or wimper in pain. This also happens when an external injury or internal injury (such as an organ) is touched. Whining or vocalization that is unprovoked may be caused from an internal injury as well. Some breeds of dogs (such as the American Pit Bull Terrier) have a higher pain threshold and need to be watched more closely for signs of pain. Breeds with a high pain tolerance are more likely to endure the pain without vocalization.

Another clue to pain is a change in temperament. A dog that is in pain may show signs of aggression. Please take note of this before concluding that a dog has become vicious and let your veterinarian know so that the correct treatment can be administered. Also females in general (even humans!) have days when they are just in a bad mood for no obvious reason. Take note of days of times that these mood swings occur as well as any events that might have triggered them.

Other signs that your dog may be sick:

Ears: discharge, debris, odor, scratching, crusted tips, twitching or shaking.

Eyes: redness, swelling or discharge.

Nose: runny, thickened or colored discharge, crusty.

Coughing, sneezing, vomiting or gagging.

Shortness of breath, irregular breathing or prolonged/heavy panting

Evidence of parasites in the dogs stool, strange color, blood in the stool, or lack of a bowel movement (constipation).

Loss of appetite or not drinking as much water as normally would.

Weight Loss.

Strange color of urine, small amount of urine, straining, dribbling, or not going as frequently as normal.

Bad odor coming from mouth, ears, or skin.

Hair loss, wounds, tumors, dander or change of the skins color.

Biting of the skin, parasites, scratching or licking the skin frequently.

Recently, I've had the pleasure of being in "The Zone!" Personally, I've got to say that it was nice being there. Just what is "The Zone"?

Well, you've heard of athletes talk about being in "The Zone" - that magical place where everything clicks. The physical and mental processes are working in coordination, and everything happens just right. In any athletic, competitive sport, the professional athlete trains and works hard for those special moments. With a golfer, it's that moment when the stance of the body, the grip on the golf club, the position of the ball on the tee is just right. The golfer looks down the fairway and visualizes the flight path of the ball, the distance, and where the ball is going to land. The golfer looks back down at the ball and finds that split second of absolute peace and focus. The golfer swings the perfect arch and position of the arms, and then brings the club back down toward the ball. The face of the club strikes the ball at the perfect position and the ball follows the same path the golfer visualized. That is what it's like to be in "The Zone!"

The same can apply to programming and writing. As a programmer, it's that moment when everything begins to make sense. Here's how it works: You're on a tight schedule and under pressure to deliver a completed build of your software. You force yourself to remain focused on the tasks at hand. You've got everything in position for productivity. Energy drink and snack on the side. Your favorite code cranking music blaring on your headphones. The chair is in the perfect position for productivity, and you have the appropriate books and notes on your desk. You launch all the right software tools on your computer and if you're fortunate enough to have two monitors or computers - you have a browser up on one screen for doing Google searches. You dive in. It takes a good hour or two to get really cranking. Then it all starts to click! You have multiple code modules all open at the same time. The global and local variables are all in your head, and you know what their current values are as you step through your code. You come up with a way to shrink 20 lines of code down to 3, without impacting performance. And you just figured out a new algorithm for getting the desired functionality in your program. The music still blares in your headphones but you no longer hear it. Instead, variables, data, and formulas dance in your mind and out through your fingers. You type madly trying to keep up with the flow of the ideas, fearing that the slightest interruption or pause will cause the images to disappear. And then it happens! You hit the wall! You find yourself staring at the screen for almost a half hour and nothing has been typed. Your brain just quit. You think that you've only been working for a few hours but then you realize that you just spent 18 hours straight at the computer.

So, now you crash. You grab something to eat and then hit the sack. But 4 to 6 hours later, you get up. As soon as you're up, the ideas, variables, data, and algorithm's appear again. You can't wait to sit back down at the computer and start cranking out code again. This pace continues, for days, until you finally reach your goal - or RL (real life) gets in the way and forces you to take a break. Or in the most severe cases, your body and mind screams "Enough!" and you crash for 20 hours straight. I can feel you all nodding your heads in agreement. It's almost like a drug. You get so wrapped up in the creativity and outflow of coding that you forget about everything else. It's a great way to forget about the RL. It can actually be refreshing! But at a cost - the family and friends forget who you are. You step away from your desk for a nature break and they look at you like you're from another planet. But then, not shaving, washing, and wearing the same clothes for several days in a row, is a big contributor toward getting those types of looks. Plus, it's not healthy. Sitting in the same position for such long durations, makes you prone to blood clots and other types of medical problems. Finding the right balance is the challenge.

My recent experience has been while working on a Java application for Blackberry devices. A very tight deadline, compounded by the fact that I was adding functionality to someone else's code, and it was the first time that I did work for the Blackberry platform. (Non-standard API's! Argh!) But once I got into "The Zone", it was great!

I don't recommend going there too often. Just like with any other addictive activity - too much can lead to personal, social, and physical problems. Find the right balance. Learn to walk away on a regular basis. Get up for a few minutes and take a small walk, at least once every couple hours. Keep some healthy foods nearby for snacking - apples, carrots, celery, and nuts. (Yea, I like crunchy stuff while programming.) If you're drinking energy drinks (I prefer anything by Hansen), then be sure to also have plenty of water to sip on too. But don't over do the energy drinks! A bad case of the shakes is not going to help you write code! And if you're under a lot of pressure and stress, be sure to spend at least one hour a day doing some form of exercise. You'll be amazed how increasing the blood flow in your body can contribute to getting your head ready for more programming, especially when you've got a tough code problem to overcome. And for your close family and friends - be sure to let them know that you still love them and that you'll be back in a short while, and follow up on your commitments to them. My personal philosophy is faith, family, friends, finances, then fun. (The finances part = work.) Everyone has their own.

So, visiting "The Zone" is cool. It's geeky, nerdy, and today - even a little trendy. Just remember to not stay there, and to come up for air every now and then.

One of the biggest mistakes I see made by well-meaning network marketers is the attempt to write, create, and place advertisements without any real training.

It was 1984, I was 21 and I knew everything.
Cuddins, I was working for Prince who, at that time, was still an up-and-coming major recording star. Id already traveled to New York, and now I was staying in Los Angeles. When I first arrived in L.A., I vividly remember driving on Santa Monica Boulevard. I was 220 pounds of muscle and bravado, I had a lot of money in my pocket and I was behind the wheel of a brand new, red Porsche 944 Turboand George Burns pulled up at the light next to me, in a Cadillac Seville. I know my kids will be asking, Whos George Burns? But back then, George was the embodiment of California celebrity, and I knew my parents would be thrilled to hear that I saw him, sort of up-close and personal. I was blown away.

I was in L.A. because Purple Rain was scheduled to premiere there. The city was abuzz with excitement. I remember Donna Mills flirted outrageously with my good buddy Bob Brooks at the afterparty. Beautiful cars, beautiful people, money, money, money. And always warm. It was obvious to me, a world-wise young man of 21, that L.A. was the greatest place on earth. Paradise. Prince once said to me Why is it that people dont like Minnesota? I had to laugh. His experience of Minnesota was pretty much May to Octoberthe best six months out of the year. Come zero-below wind-chill, monster snowfalls and black ice, he is lodged in the land of palm trees and string-bikinis! Of course he loved Minnesota! Theres no place like it in the summertime.

Princes entire entourage stayed at the Westwood Marquis. In preparation for the Purple Rain premiere, the hotel was filled with celebrities who had arrived to attend what was promising to be the hottest ticket in town. In fact, before the screening, I recall stepping out of my room into the hallway and seeing Peabo Bryson. Now, of course, I did a double-take because I hadnt expected to see him. He apparently feared I was a crazy fan or would be asking for his autograph or something, and promptly dropped his eyes and actually tried to cover his face! It struck me as funnyso I told Prince about it. Well, wouldnt you know it, later that same day I was on the elevator with Prince on the way back to his room, and Mr. Bryson steps onto the elevator. He looked at me and realized I was with Princeand Prince promptly averted his eyes and tried to cover his face. After we exited the elevator, Prince gave me his notorious devilish little smirk. I still laugh about that!

Manns Chinese Theatre (the famous Graumans Chinese, built in 1927) was hosting the premiere and, in preparation, had decked the place out with purple accents, including a Purple carpet. I remember Peewee Herman rode up in a go-cart. Stevie Nicks, Eddie Murphy, Little Richard, John Cougar, Lionel Richie and a host of other celebrities walked the Purple carpet, eagerly anticipating the screening. Warner Bros. had a custom Purple Limousine deliver Prince to the theatre and when he disembarked, looking his glam-rock-funk best, the crowd went absolutely CRAZY. That whole night, and the weeks surrounding that time were assuredly the most exciting and interesting of my young life as a bodyguard.

When we had time to ourselves, Brown Mark and I would hang out and enjoy the city. Wed go to Larry Parkers, a hoppin Beverly Hills 50s style diner famous for Haagen-Dazs milkshakes and telephones in the booths. One night we spotted two fine Stellas sitting at a booth across the way. There was one small problemthey had dates. Mark, I called him Roger, worked it out to have our mutual friend Lance call from an outside line to the phone in their boothso these two guys wouldnt see us on the phone hitting on their girls. The ploy worked and the phone in their booth rang.

The look on the girls faces was priceless. One would have thought the phone was possessed the way one girl tentatively picked it up and said, H-hello? So Lance is telling the girls on the phone that the two guys across the way are interested, and you two should drop the guys youre with. The girls laughed out loud, and then one of them came over, and gave us points for originalitybut they declined the invitation to join us. Come the end of the night, were getting ready to leave. We were each driving Ferrari 308s, Rogs was purple, mine was red. These girls saw us, saw the cars, and promptly ditched their guys. Clearly, they thought we both must be somebody and therefore worthy now of their attention. They actually asked Hey, who are you guys? Princes bass-player and Princes bodyguard. The looks on their faces as we peeled outleaving them standing in the parking lotwas pricelessagain!

So there I was, five years later, living the life in L.A. I would drive through the mountains toward Ventura when I wanted to get away and have some quiet time. Prince had me fill, wash and drive around in his 1989 custom teal blue, first-off-the-line BMW. Id crank C&C Music Factory until the tinted windows shook. Life was beautiful and perfect. L.A. was just like Id seen on television. I discovered however, that all is not as you see on TV. My first clue was when I searched in vain on Sunset Boulevard for the famous 77 Sunset Strip address. It doesnt exist in real life.

I remember the day I drove Princes car to visit some cousins who were living in Compton. It was my first time there. I was so pleased and proud to be rolling up in that blue B-Mer. My cousins saw me pull up into the driveway in that car and said they thought I must be out of my flippin mindI was in the heart of Blood territory driving a blue car. What had once been a nice neighborhood had been over-run with gangs. I was lucky I wasnt shot at. They said that because of the dark windows, gang bangers couldnt tell how many people were rollin with me, or that I might be some famous person.

I was shocked to learn that in this peaceful, normal, respectful-looking neighborhood, with all those palm trees, that regular nice folks, including children, were victims of random shootings. A lot of tragedy had befallen this neighborhood, as well as Watts and Inglewood. This was the Los Angeles a lot of residents were experiencing. It was not glamorous. It was not perfect. THIS was real life. This was the L.A. that belonged to the residents. I was only a lucky visitor. I had a lot to learn about life. After-all, I was only 21.
