William Walker Atkinson and the Law of Attraction

The law of attraction theory which came up in the late 19th century explains that through positive thinking and rightful utilization of our positive energies we are capable of bringing about significant changes in our life. The law of attraction is a school of thought that regards thinking, emotions and attitude as influential factors in creating our own reality.

William Walker Atkinson is one of the names that is most commonly associated with the law of attraction. Atkinson, who was also one of the key figures in the new age movement, was the editor of the magazine Suggestion, a New Thought Journal. But it is his book 'Thought Vibration' or law of attraction in the Thought World (1906) that saw phenomenal success. The book centers on the law of attraction and discusses at large the different ways by which it can change our lives for better.

Atkinson states in his book that we are all guided by universal laws and each of our actions is regulated by them. These laws also influence our thoughts, which like atoms, give best results when held together. It also explains that our thoughts are in a mode of spiritual union. Thought which is seen as a force by the law of attraction is capable of influencing action. The book illustrates that just as thoughts of love for a person receives a reciprocal response from a person with a similar line of thought, similarly, positive thoughts about the end attract thoughts relating to its accomplishment.

Atkinson while writing about the law of attraction states that the human mind is often affected by thoughts of failure. This often leads to restlessness and deflection from the path of progress. Atkinson states that law of attraction helps the mind in maintaining a mental calm and a state of steadiness in the face of adversity. He illustrates the point through the example of pouring oil from a vessel into troubled sea.

Atkinson suggests that the followers of the law of attraction should refrain from negative thoughts and actions. He points out that negative thoughts lead to negative actions and therefore, render us with negative experiences. It also implies negative utilization of energy. This, according to Atkinson is a wrong application of the law of attraction. Rather, he suggests use of strong thinking and confidence to fend negative energy.

According to Atkinson, the individual must have faith in himself and in his actions to be successful in his mission. Transparency between thought and action is very essential. Mere belief and wishful thinking of 'I can' and therefore, 'I will' will only work when it is followed by 'I do'.

William Walker Atkinsons writings on the law of attraction carried the school of thought to a much higher level and even to the next generations. In 2006, a film named The Secret was made on the basis of his principles.

Satellite TV - A Beginner's Guide to Satellite TV

Unless you have lived in a cave the past decade, you have certainly heard about satellite TV. There are currently 2 main satellite system TV choices. They are Dish Network and DIRECTV. The following will guide you through some of the basics of satellite TV.

Picture Quality:

Satellite TV offers 100% digital picture quality for a clear, crisp picture.

Audio Quality:

Satellite TV allows you access to hundreds of channels of digital sound and digital music channels. DIRECTV offers over 65 digital XM satellite radio channels and Dish Network offers over 60 channels of Sirius satellite radio channels.

Channels:

Basic packages through DIRECTV offer over 40 channels including the local channels while Dish Network's basic package offers 100 channels. Both satellite providers offer over 250 channels in their premier packages.

Both providers offer many dedicated sports and movie channels. DIRECTV is the exclusive provider of the "NFL Sunday Ticket" which offers die hard football fans access to their favorite NFL team's games.

HDTV:

What better way to put that new HDTV to work then to test out the many HD channels offered by the satellite tv providers. Dish Network currently has the highest amount of HD channels with over 30, however DIRECTV has recently announced that it will soon have the capacity for 150 HD channels.

Local channels:

For years, the biggest drawback to satellite tv was their lack of local network channels in many areas. Many viewers did not want to lose access to their local tv stations so they paid a few more bucks to the local cable tv company. Now both Dish Network and DIRECTV are now able to offer local channels for most markets.

Cost:

Generally costs of satellite tv is very competitive, many times it costs lower then a comparable amount of channels with the local digital cable provider. Both Dish Network and DIRECTV currently offer packages starting at under $30 per month, while their premier packages go up to about $90 per month.

Equipment:

In order to broadcast channels, there needs to be a line of sight between the broadcaster and receiver. While local broadcast channels lose line of sight due to mountains and the natural curve of the earth, satellite tv has the benefit of broadcasting from the sky where all you need is a line of sight to the southern sky. In order to receive these signals you need to use a powerful antenna, which is what the satellite dish is. In addition to the satellite dish, you will also need a receiver, which is included in the installation.

In the past, rural tv viewers were unable to view more then a fuzzy channel or two over the air broadcasts if the local cable company was not able to run cable to their home. Now anyone with line of sight to the southern sky can have access to the hundreds of crystal clear audio and video that satellite tv offers at a very competitive price.

Satellite tv is a great option to consider when looking at setting up your ultimate home theater system.

3-Step Clean Sweep Program to Organize

3-Step Clean Sweep Program

1 - Purge
2 - Simplify
3 - Organize

Getting Started

Springtime is when many folks give their homes and offices a good cleaning. For every thing there is a season, and this is the season to get rid of the winter cobwebs. The hardest part of this project is deciding where to begin. The second hardest part is to get started. There is always more to do than time allows and thinking about it can be overwhelming. But, who says it all has to be done in the springtime? Choose what works best for you. Do one room a month or consider cleaning and organizing all the closets before you tackle drawers and shelves. You can establish the program and schedule the time. Remember, organizing is all about changing behaviors and making wise choices.

Before you jump up and dig right in, take time to plan the attack. Organize your thoughts first and then the action stage will be easier. For every hour expended in the planning stage, three to four hours are saved in the execution phase. Spending a little time to save a lot of time is very good advice. So lets begin to plan.

1. Plan it on paper - Make a list of target areas.

2. Divide and Conquer - Break down large areas into small tasks and determine the action steps necessary to complete each portion.

3. Supplies - Having the right tool for the job makes the task so much easier. Be sure to have ample supplies on handgarbage bags, storage and recycling boxes, cleaning supplies, rags, step stool

4. Schedule - Make an appointment with yourself to complete each bite-size area. By now, you are in the habit of scheduling 15-minute blocks of time to accomplish specific tasks. Make and keep those daily appointments with yourself to tackle the clean sweep chores. The process of scheduling converts wishful desires into a commitment.

Step 1 - Purge

Overabundance is a waster a waster of time, money, space and energy. With too much stuff you waste time looking for what you want; you waste money for storage, maintaining, insuring; you waste precious room for items seldom or never used; you waste energy just thinking about getting it all organized.

When you take the time to reduce the number of things you have (purge), you will automatically increase the available space for the things you truly love and use. Why would you try to find room in the closet for ten pairs of sneakers when actually you only wear the two newest pairs? For what reason are you keeping the extras? Are you making wise choices with what you actually store? A positive benefit of purging is the release of claustrophobic symptoms. Thats right! When useless clutter piles up, you panic and take flight.

Instead of running, think attack mode. Take time to get rid of things that are broken, worn out, unused or unloved. No doubt, you will come across the obvious stuff to toss, but not everything needs to be relegated to the landfills. There are plenty of places to recycle useable items. http://www.organizingresources.com/pressreleases/recycle.htm

Letting go means increased space and less time searching through clutter. You may also find your budget receives a big boost now that you do not have to maintain, insure and store unused items. Selling items or giving as a donation will reap the benefit of increased cash or a tax deduction. Purging benefits! Remember that more than three of anything constitutes a collection and there are always strings attachedstoring, cleaning, repairing, insuring and on and on. You can control clutter only when you have less of it. Vow to save only what you can manage.

Step 2 - Simplify

Life has become incredibly complicated. We have more choices regarding work, family, friends, education, self-development, homes, furniture, food, places to eat, hobbies, travel and on and on. In todays fast-paced world, there is too much to do, too many demands, an overload of information and way too little time. There are opportunities every day to make more commitments and with each new commitment, we lose some space environmental, physical, emotion and mental space.

Simplicity does not mean living an austere and stark life. It means being aware of the illusions of necessities. Simplifying is a choice. You get to decide what simple living means to you. Basically, it means to add joy, fulfillment, passion and love to your existence while eliminating those things that drain you of time, money, space and energy. You can choose to appreciate people, places and things in your life. First purge, then simplify and the process of organizing will be much easier. There will be more breathing space.

You can control clutter only when you have less of it. Unfortunately, many of us find it easier to be buried in clutter than figure out a way to take care of it. Panic sets in when you look at all you have accumulated and wonder where to begin to clear the spaces. Recognizing the fact that you are held in bondage to your possessions will precipitate action to simplify. Let go and feel the freedom!

Step 3 - Organize

When you start the organizing process think retrieval, not storage. The ultimate goal is to be able to find what you want when you want it. Purge the excess, broken and useless stuff and then simplify the remaining items by letting go of the unnecessary. Spend a little time deciding what is truly important in your life. Avoid playing mind games with the belief that it may be useful someday. Beware of the words like someday, maybe, should, somewhere, somehow Such thoughts only add more pressure to keep items that really add nothing to your lifes purpose. Ask yourself when was the last time you used it and under what circumstances would you need it again. Remember this is all about choices!

Now you are ready to organize those things that you choose things that are useful, beautiful and add joy to your life. Start with existing storage space first (closets, drawers, shelves). You will discover more room once you have purged the unwanted and simplified the clutter. Refrain from adding new storage areas. New or expanded storage units simply create more places to accumulate more clutter and ultimately disorganization.

A well-organized closet (as well as drawers, bookcases, desk, kitchen, office, car, garage) saves time, money and effort. Why are you keeping so much? Think about the 80/20 rule Paretos Principle. Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923) stated that 80% of work is accomplished by 20% of the people. He was a revolutionary thinker.

You can apply his principle to the clothes in your closets. Simply put, 80% of your clothes are rarely worn. In other words, 20% of the clothes in your closets are worn the majority of the time. So scrutinize the 80% for usefulness and begin the purging process. Deciding what to wear in the morning will be easier with an orderly closet of those frequently worn outfits.

This same idea can be useful when you inspect your files, kitchen cabinets, garden tools, office supplies and every aspect of your life 20% of your stuff is used frequently, 80% rarely or never. Be willing to discern the importance of 80% of the stuff you have accumulated over the years. Purge the broken, unwanted, unloved and unnecessary. Recognize the important 20% and vow to maintain only those things that you love, that you use and that bring joy to your life.

Finally start the organizing project by gathering and storing objects in the places they are used. The result is that you can easily find what you want when you want it. Strive for one-motion storage. When you open a cabinet, closet or drawer and reach in to retrieve something, you want to do it with one hand and without having to move things around. Avoid piling. A good rule is never stack more than three pieces.

Henry David Thoreau defined clutter when he said he would rather toss an object that was in his way than continually move it around just to dust. He knew what he wanted to do with his time -- wander the woods, write books and philosphize about life. What do you want to do with your time?

Judith Kirk provides hands-on and coaching in simplification and organizational mastery. She uses a holistic approach to teach life management skills and assures an immediate physical, emotional and psychological payoff when chaos and clutter are eliminated. The impact of simplifying and organizing renews the spirit and builds confidence. Order is the foundation upon which to build inner peace, contentment and joy in life. Japanese Developing Sex Robots

What propels human innovation? Well, we know where the funding comes from. We know that funding comes when a Return on Investment is available. What do people spend money on? Well, think of Maslows hierarchy of needs. People want to maintain self preservation, so you will find the greatest technological money flows in those things, which protect the sanctity of life; things such as Health Care and Medical advances, security and military. People also wish respect from their fellow man. They want to look good; thus you will find consumer items such as make-up, clothing, sports cars, etc. Humans also want companionship and entertainment and so we see advances in movie special effects, computer games and now the Japanese are developing human female robots. Today they advertise them as maids, receptionists and servers. But in the true spirit of Kama Sutra, you can bet that those Japanese robotic engineers will soon be designing Blonde Hair Blue Eyed sex robots to serve their will.

These Japanese scientists have unveiled the most human-looking robot to date, well at least in the public domain. Secret research is being done now which looks towards the future to build robots so real they will fool humans, in other words they maybe sitting next to you and you would never even know it. The Japanese scientists call their new robot android Repliee Q1 Expo. She flutters her eyelids in normal human increments, looks like she is breathing and moves her hands just like a human would. This robot has over 42 actuators. But indeed, this is merely the first step in human type robotics.

We all know that the Internet is used most in recreational use for surfing websites, such as pornography, chat, online dating and personal communications of the sort. It should be obvious that the near future of robotic androids will be used for sexual pleasure. Isaac Asimov and others have cited this as the most probable use. Not only have science fiction authors put these futuristic predicts forth but Hollywood has as well in several movies such as A.I. Artificial Intelligence.

Using tactile sensors and the latest Haptics research the Japanese scientists are well on their way to the development of their next marketable technology. The Repliee Q1 Expo has 42 actuators, but some of the MIT robots, will mimic the human nerves in the hand already have 250 sensors. New skin technologies will allow the robots to have real human skin grown in petri dishes and these might also be incorporated in the sexual revolution of robots. Want to learn more about Repliee Q1 Expo;

Baby Names - Choosing Trendy or Traditional

Lists of baby names are always fun to look at, whether you're seeking a name for your soon-to-be-born baby boy or baby girl, wondering about the popularity of your own first name, or just curious about what baby names are currently hot.

What I find particularly interesting is tracking the popularity of baby names over the decades. In looking through U.S. government baby name lists from 1880 to the present, some amusing patterns emerge, particularly in regards to baby names for girls.

For example, in Victorian times Biblical names, such as Mary, Sarah and Ruth were very popular for baby girls. There were also many baby names that sounded very old-fashioned to me, as a kid growing up in the 1960s, including names like Martha, Alice, Bertha and Minnie.

From the 1920s to the 1950s certain baby names rose in popularity. For example, I went to school with many Susans, Debbies, Patricias, and Lindas. All of these baby names have since waned, to be replaced, by the 1980s, with fancier names such as Jennifer, Jessica and Nicole. When I was a children's librarian in the 1980s my preschool storyhours were populated with little girls named Lauren and Jenny, and little boys named Alex and Matthew.

More recently there's been a lot of renewed interest in more "old-fashioned" baby names like Hannah, Abigail and Ethan, plus many Biblical names such as Sarah, Rachel, Joshua, Jacob, and Samuel. There's also been a surge in nontraditional baby names including Madison, Ashley and Brianna for baby girls, and Brandon and Logan for baby boys.

It's interesting to consider the whys and wherefores of such developments. Sometimes, I suspect, the popularity of a specific actor or fictional character might result in many babies with a particular name. For example, were some of the Lauras born in the 1970s and 1980s given a name suggested by older brothers and sisters who were growing up watching "Little House on the Prairie ?" Were some attributable to the super popular Laura of "General Hospital" fame ?

Today Madison is a very highly ranked baby name for girls (ranking number 3 in 2003) but, when the film "Splash" came out in 1984, Tom Hanks' character told Daryl Hannah's character that Madison was not a bona fide first name.

While baby girls' names seem quite subject to the whims of fashion and the top ten lists can change radically over time, I've noticed that, in general, the top baby names for boys remain far more stable. Names like John, William and James are perennials, perhaps because baby boys are often named for their fathers, perpetuating the popularity of certain baby names from generation to generation. The "Junior" factor aside, baby boys are also less apt to be given fanciful names.

A comparison of the changing fortunes of my own first name, Barbara, with those of my husband's name, Robert, gives a good illustration of the difference in stability between baby girl names and baby boy names over time.

My name grew in popularity in the 1930s, '40s and '50s, peaking at the number 2 position in baby name popularity, which it tenaciously held from 1937 to 1944. When I attended grad school, of a class of approximately forty students, there were no less than three baby boomers named Barbara. Should I thank the actress Barbara Stanwyck for this? Alas, my first name later suffered a slow, steady decline and placed at a pitiful number 628 position on the baby names popularity list for the U.S. in 2003.

Robert, on the other hand, has survived the vicissitudes of baby name popularity. It held a coveted spot on the top ten most popular baby names list every year from 1896 to the late 1980s, often peaking at number 1 between the 1920s and the 1950s. It has gradually slipped since the 1990s, but still managed to hold the respectable slot of number 35 in 2003.

When naming a baby there are, of course, many other points to consider besides how popular or unique a name is. Here are some helpful tips that you can use with your other children to get them involved in choosing a name for the new baby and to make the process fun:

1. Baby names need to go nicely with the sound of your last name. Also, pick a first name and a middle name that go together well. (So maybe not something like Erasmus Beelzebub Smith!)

2. When your family finds a name you all like, look at the initials to be sure that you don't give the new baby a name with initials that will make people laugh. (So maybe not Pamela Iris Green, which equals P.I.G.!)

3. You might not want a baby name that is so unusual that the other kids will make fun of your little brother or sister as he or she grows up. (So maybe not Rosebud or Molasses!)

4. You also might not want a baby name that is so trendy that it will sound funny by the time the baby is ten years old. (So maybe not Sunshine!)

5. You probably shouldn't pick a name that's really cute for an adorable little baby but will sound silly when the baby grows up. (So maybe not Dimples!)

6. Avoid baby names that might produce insulting nicknames when people shorten them. (So maybe not Smellonius, or Smelly for short!)

7. You and your family might not want a name that is so hard to spell or to pronounce that people will always get it wrong and your poor little brother or sister will have to go through life correcting people. (So maybe not something like Incandescence, or is it Incandessints? )

8. You and your family might want to pick baby names in honor of favorite relatives or ancestors, or special names that show your family's ethnic roots. You might even find a special name from a book or movie that you love. (Like Harry?)

9. You might want to look through books of baby names and pick one that has a special meaning that you like - maybe something that means "sweet" or "kind" or "brave." (So maybe not wimp!)

10. You might want to think about names that will go nicely with your name and your other brothers' and sisters' names, so that if mom or dad are calling you all for dinner or signing a birthday card to grandma it won't sound too crazy. (So maybe not "Happy Birthday, Grandma! Love, Joey, Cindy and Dweevo!")

There are hundreds of names waiting for you out there, so good luck on your search for the perfect name!

A Simple DIY Facial Can Help You Unclog Pores and Achieve Your Dream Complexion!

Can't seem to get rid of clogged pores on your face? This DIY facial should aid the extraction of oil and dirt from your pores. First, scrub face gently with an exfoliating facial wash, and then wash with warm water. Pat face dry. Boil a pot of water, or pour boiling water into a large bowl. Position your face above the pot/bowl and drape a towel over your head, exposing your face to the steam for 15 mins. Be careful not to get too close to the hot water as you may get scalded by the steam. Adjust your position if the heat gets uncomfortable.

After 15 mins, pat face dry and apply a clay mask to extract excess oils. After leaving the mask on for the required time, dip your face towel into the now warm water and use it to clean the mask off. Splash face with cold water and follow up with toner after cleansing to close up pores.

Steaming opens up your pores and helps to loosen the oils and dirt in pores so they will be easier to extract. However, always remember to close pores with cold water and toner so that dirt doesn't get in again. Do this facial about twice a week to maintain clear skin.

Be warned NOT to do this before a big event or date as sometimes sebum in a clogged pore is only brought to the surface and not extracted properly, resulting in a pimple appearing. The resulting pimple should be easy enough to get rid of using pimple medication or during the next steaming session.

Niche Markets for Big Profits

If you've ever marketed a product, service, or opportunity then you're probably familiar with the concept of finding a niche market. The question is how targeted is your niche market, and is it as targeted as it could be?

First, let me explain the reason that you need to know your niche market. You see, it seems that everywhere you turn, both online and offline, someone is selling something. The way to be successful in your marketing efforts is to market your product, service, or opportunity to people who actually want what you have to offer. By marketing to people who want what you have, you'll cut your advertising expenses dramatically, streamline your marketing and advertising efforts, and increase your profit margin greatly.

So how do we find our niche markets?

To find a niche market, we must first understand that the internet is based on a concept called Keywords. All web pages, pay per click advertising, online articles, and press releases are indexed and presented based on keywords. This is how we find what we are looking for on the internet.

For example, if I'm looking for widgets, I'm going to type widgets in my favorite search engine and see what comes up. The first thing you'll see are the standard search engine results that are all based on the keywords you have typed in. You'll also see sponsored advertising on the right side of the screen that is based on keywords. This of course depends on the search engine you are using, but most major search engines have some sort of sponsored pay per click programs.

Keywords are simply what the internet is based on. If you know what keywords to target, you can find anything, or anyone that you want.

How does this apply to you as a marketer?

Simple, keep your keywords in mind. The first misconception is that there are only a few keywords, or niche markets that will work for your product or service. The truth is that if you don't have at least 200 to 500 keywords for your product, then you're probably missing out on potential sales. This is especially true if you are doing any type of pay per click advertising or working on search engine optimization.

The easiest way to find hot niche markets is to use a tool called Good Keywords. There's not a cost to use this tool, but it will significantly boost your sales by using it to do your keyword research. Download Good Keywords at www.goodkeywords.com.

Now type in your general keyword into the Good Keywords program. For example, let's say you're marketing shoes. When you type in shoes, you'll see a huge list of related keyword searches and the total number of times each phrase was searched in the previous month. We see the term shoes at the top of the list and we see that shoes were searched 751,318 times last month.

By scrolling down through the list you'll see many other phrases that you might not have been aware of. By understanding what people are searching for, and how many are searching each month, you'll be better prepared to do your advertising and marketing.

For example, the term shoes, is probably too broad to be much use, but as you look down through the list you see women's shoes, running shoes, and even skate shoes. These are much more targeted markets and will provide you with much more targeted prospects and leads when you market or advertise your products.

Take some time and research your market. Find keywords that reflect what you are selling, and narrow down your phrases so that you can target very specific niches. You'll also find much less competition in these smaller niche markets and it will be much easier to make a name for yourself and your business in these smaller market niches.

Feed the Search Engines! Content...Content...Content

Just as our bodies need food to fuel us everyday your website needs fuel to feed the search engines for placement and inclusion.

There are many different factors to consider when trying to optimize your website but one of the easiest and most successful ways is to feed the search engine with content.

The engines thrive on seeing that you are adding new content to your website very often. As a webmaster, I have seen the results of many of my customers' sites climbing to the top by adding good industry related content to their site. You may feel you neither have the time or the content to add to your site but in today's competitive web world how can you not justify taking the time or creating content. There are many different ways to add content to your site that may take as little as 10 or 15 minutes a week to do so.

Here are a few ideas, and if you can apply one or all of these to your site you will be feeding the hunger the search engines are craving for ...Good Quality Content:

Industry Related Articles - There is no better way to earn creditability with your customers then writing articles about your industry. Your article does not have to be long it just has to give good quality information about your industry. Once you write an article, not only do you want to upload it to your website but you need to submit it to one of the many article submission websites. Don't forget to add your name and URL to the bottom of every article you submit to build your link popularity.

Products Reviews - This is one of the easiest things to add to your website. No one knows your products like you do. Give your visitors a complete detail of how to use, what to do or how your specific product or service can help them.

Blogs- Blogs can greatly increase your visibly but they have to be created and used properly. Blogs do require a commitment from you but remember this; the search engines just love them. Your blog needs to have a specific reason, a draw for your visitors, a reason that they would bookmark it and come back and read it time and time again. Whatever you decide to blog about it needs to be updated on a daily or every other day to make it work for you.

Customer Testimonials - What a great way to show your potential clients the confidence your past customers have in your products or services. Ask all your clients to provide you a short testimonial. It is an easy way to add current content to you site often.

Industry Tips & Ideas - You are the true expert in your industry and your customers want to hear what you have to say. Everyone likes to get something for free, so share a bit of your knowledge with them by providing free tips and ideas on how to better use your products or services.

Newsletters - E-Newsletters are a great way to keep your name in front of your customers, but what many website owners fail to do is to add those newsletters to their websites. With the over abundance of junk email we get many people opt out to receive e-newsletters on a regular basis. In this case it would benefit you by adding those weekly or monthly newsletters to your site so they can be read there.

A couple things to remember when adding new content (pages) to your site:

Don't forget to make your title tags captivating.

Keep your keywords toward the front of your title, description and keyword tags. (Even though very few search engines take into account the description or keyword tags anymore it is always best to still add them.)

If writing an article take one of your keyword phrases and write a specific article about that, keeping in mind keyword density.

Which ever of the above ideas you choose to use keep in mind your target market and create your new pages with it in mind... Remember industry related content!

Don't forget to update your site map with your new pages.

Update your Yahoo urllist.txt and your sitemap.xml file with Google as well.

Lastly...add a new page to your site every week better yet every day!

The Secret To Writing Success

I have a friend who has enjoyed a long successful career as a published novelist. More than once we took part in the same panel at a writer's conference. Whenever it came time to field questions from the audience I came to expect -- actually anticipate -- that some bright-eyed, eager novice would direct a particular question at my friend. It wasn't so much the question that I anticipated as her answer.

The question would always be some variation of "What is the secret to your success?" We all knew it would happen and we would always sit back and let my friend handle it. Not only because she was the most successful among us, but because she had the best answer.

My friend would always play to the audience. She'd lean forward conspiratorially, check to make sure the doors were closed, and swear the audience to secrecy. Then she'd repeat the question and pause for a few dramatic heartbeats and answer: "The BIC Method!"

Those of us in on the secret would begin to grin at this point, but it wasn't until she explained the BIC method that the other writers would get the joke. You see BIC stands very simply for Butt In Chair.

Yes, her writing success is that simple. Placing her bottom on the chair in front of her computer and writing every day -- whether or not she was in the mood, whether or not she was motivated, whether or not she was inspired, and whether or not she had a paid writing gig.

Regular writing improves the quality of your writing by giving you the chance to hone your skills and experiment with new methods. Writing regularly also generates greater quantity -- in two ways. First, obviously simply disciplining yourself to generate two or four or ten pages a day will quickly add up in quantity, but the more disciplined you become about this regular production the easier it will be to achieve your minimum and you can keep step up your daily goal accordingly.

Improving the quality of your writing and generating more writing projects gives you that much more to market to the reading and publishing public and therefore increases your chances of writing success.

It really is that simple and it really isn't a secret. Most successful writers know the BIC method is key to their success.

Of course some of those eager-beaver beginners don't want to believe in the BIC method because it actually involves work and discipline. They'd rather believe it was as simple as dreaming up a catchy pseudonym. But if you have become a writer because you love it then the BIC method is the best possible news. Simply keep on doing what you love and you can make your dreams come true.

How to Handle Classroom Management During Transitions

Every quality lesson has students transitioning from one activity to another, or, as I like to say, from one mini-lesson to another.

Mini-lessons are a great way for teachers to address student attention span and teach their content without the students getting bored. And, if students are not bored, teachers will face less classroom management problems.

However, the transitions from one activity to another can also be the cause of many classroom management problems. If the transitions are unstructured, teachers can guarantee themselves an increase in classroom management issues.

Therefore, the best defense is a good offense in other words, teachers need to make sure every transition in the classroom is structured.

Here are some simple, but effective classroom management tips for transitioning between mini-lessons simply follow the steps below:

1. Signal
Teachers must have some type of signal to bring student momentum to a halt. In my experience nothing works better than a simple egg timer. On the very first day of school I teach my students that when that timer "beeps" that is their signal to stop what they are doing and listen for the next set of directions.

2. Be Specific With Directions
The fact is students' cannot read a teacher's mind. Therefore, the more specific a teacher is with the directions the better it is for everyone.

Let's look at an example where a teacher is transitioning from an activity that involved the students completing a worksheet to an activity that involves reading from the text book. There is a big difference between, "Put the worksheets away and open up your text book to page 323" and "You have 1 minute and 30 seconds to put the worksheets in your folder and open your textbook to page 323 without talkingwhen the timer beeps stop what you are doing and listen for the next set of directions."

See the difference?

If you want to take it a step further, it would be a good idea for the teacher to then write the textbook page on the board.

3. Check-for-Understanding
As with any set of directions teachers need to "check" to see if their students actually know what to do. Teachers should simply call on students at random to repeat the directions. "Johnny, what are you going to? Sarah, how much time do you have?" etc.

4. Model
Depending on the complexity of the transition teachers may need to actually model the procedure. For example, if students need to move into new groups then the teacher may want to demonstrate how he expects this to happen. Remember, students' cannot read the teacher's mind.

However, modeling can also be used for simple tasks such as putting the caps back on the markers and putting the markers away in their proper place in the classroom. Again, if you want it done, you must teach it.

5. "Go!"
After completing the above steps the teacher simply sets the timer and says "Go!"

Having a few different activities within a single lesson is essential to being an effective teacher. However, the transitions can also be the cause of many classroom management problems. By following the above steps teachers can transition from activity to activity without any classroom management problems.
