Dog Fighting - The Big Picture

I am not for dog fighting, but there is a message in the BIG picture the Government and media have painted in the Michael Vick case. I think its a disgrace and inhumane; no animal or persons, for that matter, should be engaged in such cruelty. I do, however, have a difference of opinion with how Michael Vicks case is evolving. What is the BIG picture in question?

Michael Vick is an African American football player, recently charged for running a dog fighting ring and gambling. He is a quarterback who once played for the Atlanta Falcons, earning some $130 million dollars. Vick faces up to five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines. Hes not the first athlete to be charged with dog fighting. Nevertheless, one must question the Governments and the medias efforts.

Its a disgrace to run a dog fighting ring or go to a dog fight, but people attend violent sporting events all the time. To add to this, hunting is categorized as a sport. Isnt hunting cruelty to animals? Whats wrong with this picture? Im not condoning any of these sports, but weve got to ask ourselves two things: does the punishment fit the crime; and, what message are we sending to our children and people across this country?

Indeed, dog fighting is cruelty to animals. However, unlike dog fighting, boxing, hockey, football and the new hype the Ultimate Fighting Championship are all cruelty to people. Hunting is another big issue. Many people hunt and kill animals for FUN. How is it okay when these sports are highly publicized and not inhumane in Americas eyes? Are we saying were not for violent dog fighting, but we are for violent sports? Im confused!

There is no question in my mind that dog fighting is inhumane. On the same note, what about the young men, fresh out of high school, that are pulled away from their lives and families and sent to war in the Middle East? Isnt that inhumane too? The same passion the Government and the media are currently displaying in their fight against dog fighting is the same passion that should be displayed in their fight against war and violence across the board.

The dogs involved in many dog fighting rings are bred and trained to fight to their death. Comparably so, soldiers sent to war are also trained to fight to their death. We know that dogs dont have freewill and are forced to fight by their owners; and, people join the military by their own freewill. Yet, soldiers are forced to go to war by the Government. Again, whats wrong with this picture?

The bottom line remains: the BIG picture. What are the Government and the media telling our children and people in this country and across the world? Perhaps, Michael Vicks case could have been approached differently. Who knows? But, we need to look at the BIG picture: what message are we sending?

What Drives Paid To Read E-Mails, And How To We Ensure Success?

Most of us are familiar with the term spam, and more the phrase 'junk mail'. We are angered by it, frustrated with dealing with it, and use tools specifically designed to block most messages from even reaching our inbox. The problem is that there are simply millions of products desperately being sold 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and Joe blogs MUST see what is on offer or he/she won't buy them.

It doesn't matter whether profit is to be made through e-books or gold watches, unless the item is on display it won't ever be bought. Imagine going into a shop and finding that everything that was on sale was hidden away in a secret closet. The shop would soon go bankrupt.

We the consumer have spam filters at our disposal keeping unwanted mail from our sight, and when surfing the internet, most banner advertisements are subconsciously overlooked. The would be marketer is always continually fighting our attempts to block out their advertisements and so the paid to read e-mail is born. How?

Simple, if we must open mail to confirm reading it, we will undoubtedly see at least part of it in the process. Although we are ultimately in control, one of our barriers has been bypassed and the product is one step closer to the checkout counter.

A web search will uncover thousands of sites offering money or points and prizes to view e-mail that would otherwise be sent to the trashcan un-viewed. Most will offer some referral profit system as well as rewards for looking at the sites they advertise and it is a large down-line that most will make money from.

It all sounds too good to be true. Open an e-mail, click on a link to confirm reading it and get paid. Unfortunately it is exactly that attitude that make many systems fail through time. The site being advertised wants you to visit their site certainly but not just to say you've been there. If nobody actually stays on-site for long, the advertising campaign will fail and the revenue generated by this form of advertising will cease.

Now I want you to consider an alternative strategy, one which will do 3 key things.

  1. You get what you wanted from your get paid to read site, money!
  2. You also SAVE some money by carefully selecting items that you need anyway that may be less expensive than one you would have bought in any-case.
  3. The advertiser keeps paying to place their sites in the paid to read queue because they have had success.
Lets face facts, we all need to buy things. But it doesn't have to be from the same place we usually do, so if during your attempts to make money, you see a bargain, grab it. This can only be achieved by quickly looking at the page in question although you don't have to read every word. That way, we all win.

Earlier I briefly mentioned referrals. One of the most important parts of this strategy is that you contact your down-line members with a custom e-mail explaining what I have to you. It is true that most will ignore your heed, but some will take your advise and the system you have chosen will stand a far greater chance of long term success as a result.

The Energy Efficient Home and Why You Should Have One

It makes sense to have an energy efficient home and to use solar power if possible. The Earth only gets about 2 Billionth of the energy of the Sun, but that is enough to divide amongst all the homes on the surface of the planet. It is wise for people to get an energy audit, perhaps some infrared photos to see where they are wasting energy. Solar Chimneys are another good idea.

Most of all people need to get into the habit of efficiency and not wasting anything. We need folks to participate in recycling and solar power in the home. Indeed, those who partake in smarter energy solutions for their home will be thinking about other environmental issues too, which our Online Think Tank was recently reminded of. That is a good call indeed, good point.

Of course with any great energy source there are always drawbacks. For instance we are concerned with the batteries that will be needed for solar cell energy storage and where will all those batteries end up? In the bottom of the ocean, I hope not.

There are many ways we can reduce our pollution signatures, how about: "Ocean Wave Energy" and what is your take on Nuclear Energy? Hydro-electric is problematic in some places due to droughts, for instance in Australia.

Perhaps if everyone does their part and we could indeed see some progress and really we have, even corporations and businesses are thinking about energy efficient buildings. There are a lot of interesting "Green Roof Top" initiatives, I believe it will very much help in Urban Heat, rooftops make up a large area in cities. Efficient energy starts at home, so please do your part okay?

Should I Obtain a Mortgage Pre-Approval Before Buying a House?

Some home buyers find the house they want, sign a contract and then look for a mortgage loan. Problem: They find out later that they were declined or only qualify for a much lesser amount for their dream house! The homeowner then promptly rejects their contract. How could this have been avoided? By first getting pre-approved for a mortgage. This saves both the homeowner and home buyer a lot of wasted time and money. Many Real Estate Agents now require home buyers to get pre-approved before helping them shop for a house.

Don't confuse being "prequalified" with being "pre-approved". Prequalification for a mortgage simply means a lender may give you a loan for a set amount, contingent on the lender checking the your credit history, employment history, down payment source, etc. Prequalification doesn't guarantee a loan commitment. In other words, if your "ducks are in a row" they may give you a loan.

In contrast, a pre-approval lets the buyer know up to what dollar amount they can receive when shopping for a house. Homeowners will accept a contract offer if a mortgage pre-approval letter is included over a prequalification letter. It's a much stronger offer. With a mortgage pre-approval, the buyer already has gone through the approval process. This gives the homeowner peace of mind, knowing that a buyer can actually buy their home instead of tying up their property for several weeks, only to realize later the buyer can't get financing.

In order to obtain a pre-approval, a mortgage loan application needs to be completed. Items needed: Bank statements, most recent paycheck stubs and last two years of W-2 tax forms. A credit check is also performed.

Once pre-approved, the home buyer should receive a pre-approval letter. This letter is a commitment from the lender to fund a loan for your home purchase. Also, an approval may be contingent on the home appraisal and the homeowner's ability to transfer the title to the buyer. Always make sure the letter is not just a prequalification letter. This has no value when making an offer to buy a home. And lastly, a signed sales agreement must be included to complete the approval process. This agreement must be signed by the homeowner and the home buyer.

Coming This Year - A Motor Bike Powered By-Hydrogen?

Are you looking for a vehicle that will have your neighbors staring in disbelief? How about a motor bike that goes 100 miles on $4 worth of... hydrogen? A British company, Intelligent Energy, recently unveiled just such a vehicle.

The ENV (it stands for Energy Neutral Vehicle) is described by Intelligent Energy (IE) as the worlds first purpose-built, fuel-cell motorbike. It is based around IEs CORE fuel cell, which the company says is a fully-integrated 1kW fuel cell generator providing power on demand directly to the drive-train.

The ENV is actually a hybrid vehicle in that it also has a battery pack that provides a 6kW peak load to the motor to help the bike accelerate from a standing start.

IE says the ENV motor bike goes from 0 to 30 in 7.3 seconds and has a top speed of 50 mph. The company also says it is virtually silent (with noise emissions equivalent to an everyday home computer) and its emissions are almost completely clean."

On a full tank, the ENV bike could be used continually for up to four hours without any need for re-fueling. The bike can be used by almost any rider as it has simple controls and no gears. While it is officially classified as a motorbike, those who have ridden it say "it feels more like a very quick and responsive mountain bike.

Of course, there is a downside to a hydrogen-powered motor bike, and that is the fact that you just don't find hydrogen service stations on every corner. Or on just about any corner. However, Intelligent Energy is also working on new technology for separating hydrogen from other fuels, so you may find more places to say "fill 'er up" in the years to come.

Intelligent Energy has announced that when available later this year, that the ENV will initially sell for less than $10,000. But then, what's $10,000 when you're creating pratically clean emissions, and your neighbors are staring in envy?

Here's another new technology and it costs nothing. Its HD Radio and it enables AM and FM radio stations to broadcast their programs digitally. These digital broadcasts provide listeners with radically improved audio quality, more radio channels through multicasting, and new data services. To learn more about this amazing new technology, just go my Web site, http://www.hd-radio-home.com, to get all the buzz.

What Is Spyware And How Did I Get It?

There are three types of software you are likely to encounter whilst using your PC online. Spyware, adware and malware. Most people use a collective term to describe them. Either a virus or spyware. Strictly speaking they are designed differently to perform certain functions.

Spyware.
Spyware does what it says. It spies on you. It can monitor your activities, surfing habits, credit card information, passwords etc. and send this data back to a central location so some unscrupulous people can use this data. Unlike adware, spyware usually runs silently in the background without making you aware its there. Obviously the longer it goes undetected the more information it can retrieve from its victims. Spyware is a very serious risk and should not be taken lightly. Once an attacker has got your personal details such as credit card information, passwords for online banking etc. you stand a very real chance of identity theft and financial loss.

Adware
Adware is generally used to force adverts in front of you. It will monitor your surfing habits and when you visit a site it recognises it will force a relative advert or pop-up. Lets say you visit a site that is selling second-hand motor cars. If the spyware recognises the site you are visiting it may well force adverts in front of you that are relative to that site. For example car insurance, vehicle recovery services etc. Other types of adware just force advertising in front of you whether it is relative or not. P*rn sites are of common use and can pop-up at the most inconvenient of times (usually when the wife is stood behind you) ! Some adware will change your home page, add links to your favourites, add shortcuts to your desktop. Not such a major security risk like spyware. But it can become extremely annoying to have adverts popping up when you least expect it and having to constantly change you home page.

Malware
Malware is short for malicious software. It is designed to destroy data on your PC or cause havoc on a network. Trojans, viruses, worms etc usually fall into this category. Obviously a major security risk and the results can be catastrophic. Unless immediate action is taken to remove you will more than likely lose some, if not all, data on your PC. Its not uncommon to have to completely reformat a hard drive to remove them.

How Did I Get Infected?
There are umpteen ways it could have happened. But here are a few of the most common:
Attachments sent in e-mails.
Downloading free music.
Downloading free utilities.
Installing untrustworthy software.
Visiting certain types of websites (p*rn, warez etc.)
Installed when using instant messaging services.

Obesity Economics - The Cost of a Calorie

It might surprise some of you that economics contributes to obesity and its accompanying diseases cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension. Aside from the fact that costs of treating these chronic conditions exceed $500 billion annually (surely, that's macro-economic, right?), there is a different, micro-economic problem taking place in your wallet.

Economists typically, and wrongly, assume that consumers are rational. Most of you know that this is not the case. If that were the case, a lot of companies would be out of business - I won't name names. Especially when it comes to our bodies, we are filled with insecurities and deceit. We try hard to believe certain things because we want to believe those things; and we end up believing them. Somehow, many of us spend hundreds on diet plans and then turn around and eat a Big Mac. The question beckons - are we psychological irrational but economically rationale?

Certainly, you're getting more bang for your buck with a Big Mac. From a financial perspective, consumers should shoot for maximum satiation for minimum cash, or the lowest cents per calorie for every bite of enjoyable food.

A plate full of broccoli and a spoonful of peanut butter would both roughly be about 200 calories - if I could show you a graphical representation, the point would really hit home. Clearly, you have a choice to make. You can either maximize the dietary economics or maximize your waistline. 99 cent menus are the best example of how far we've come.Could it be that consumers are maximizing their utility and naturally gravitating toward getting the best bang for their buck while forgetting or perhaps not knowing that these decisions will probably result in thousands of dollars in treatment costs five, 10, maybe 25 years down the road? At the end of the day, it's almost surely a bad economic decision. But consumers do not think in the long run, especially in the U.S. That's why we have one of the lowest savings rates in the industrialized world while sporting the highest obesity rate.

Obesity has been attributed to many things, and is a very complex issue if we make it one. You can be fooled easily with a multi-variate analysis. It messes with our minds. It's hard to separate the noise from what's real. On the bond trading floor, I'd see the bond prices move all over the place all day long. 0.01% down, 0.05% up, 0.8$ down, back and forth until the end of the day. What was moving them? What was the cause? Nothing. Noise. A bunch of irrational traders reacting to the latest headline on CNBC. Some of my colleagues would speculate over the small movements; it happened because of this, it happened because of that. Great, if I look hard enough, I guarantee that I can find symptoms of cancer (we all can) - but that doesn't mean that I have it.

So when I see a 2% move in the price of those bonds, I know there is a real cause and I don't feel like an idiot for looking for it because I know that the probability of a 2% move being attributed to noise is extremely low is has significance. In the same way, there are tons of things we could attribute to causing a rise in obesity in America. Among them:

Ubran sprawl

Demographics (aging population)

Globalization

Sociological factors

Genetics

Psychology

Longer work hours

Increased stress

Even the higher price of gas

But none of them, in my mind, have enough significance to explain the shift. They're noise. Things pundits and politicians point to when trying to make a case for earmarked funds or research projects.

I think it comes down to this:

The cost of a calorie has declined significantly while the cost of exercise (as in opportunity cost at the expense of work or other wage earning activities) has dramatically risen, making consumers gravitate toward eating crap foods while remaining more sedentary.

Is it harder for you to go to the gym these days because you feel like you're missing out on important work? I know it is for me. That is the heart of the matter my time, our time, is more expensive. Thus, working out, or any physical activity for that matter, may be more expensive.

Unless, of course, your name is David Beckham.

Got Wood Flooring?

Wood flooring ads a touch of class to your home like no other flooring surface can. If you are looking for a flooring idea that will add durability and value to a room then wood flooring is most likely your best option. This article will look at some of reasons why adding wood flooring to your home improvement plans may be a great investment.

Wood flooring is not the type of flooring you should consider if you are looking for cheap flooring or you plan to move in a short period of time. Wood flooring is an investment into your home. Wood flooring offers comfort, style, and natural beauty to any room you choose to install it in.

Wood Flooring Is Worth The Money

The cost for wood flooring may be more than many types of surfaces, but in the long run if you consider the longevity that wood flooring will offer it really is a great investment into your home. The re-sale value will be much higher for a home with well done wood flooring.

Wood Flooring is Easy to Maintain

The nice thing about wood flooring in your kitchen or dining room is that you can clean it with a broom and the occasional light wiping up of a spill. You should check with the company that installs to see if there are any other cleaners they recommend for their particular surface. The key to maintenance is making sure you do not run a beater bar vacuum or anything that might scratch the surface.

Wood Flooring is Better for You

Todays health issues seem to be growing with all the fillers and particles that we breathe into our systems on a daily basis. With wood flooring you have less chance of dirt and mold and other harmful particles to accumulate. With a carpet you can have all kinds of un-healthy things gathering beneath the surface. With wood flooring what you se is what you get.

If you want to add value then look at wood flooring as a great way to add a touch of class to your home. The draw backs would be the added expense up front to have a professional company install them, plus the added expense of the material.

For more information on flooring try visiting http://flooring-solution.com, a website that specializes in providing helpful flooring tips, advice and resources to include Wood Flooring and more.
